Hi, I'm pretty new to this. I'm keen to make a root beer, and have it be alcoholic. I'm not really looking for it to be strong necessarily.

So it needs to be brewed. All the recipes I see don't have yeast, so I don't think they will do the job..

I gather that it can be done as easily as ginger beer..?

Also, can I do this with extract? I am in New Zealand and it is posing very difficult to get ingredients, I might be lucky to get extract imported, if not I guess I can't do anything. We're pretty strict with import laws so dunno..

Most recipes for carbonating root beer DO have yeast, so they will be slightly alcoholic, as it would be if you brewed ginger beer. Yes, you can use an extract for the flavorings (and add your own to your likining). You probably won't be able to find sassafras anywhere as it is not legal to sell in the US, where is mostly grows. But the artificial flavorings are almost the same - few can tell the difference.
