I googled "flavor of yellow part of spumoni" and found, at

This is wrong. I am writing this to counteract disinformation on the internet. Hopefully, this post will appear on future Google searches.
My earliest memory of spumoni was from when I was about 5 years old in 1951. As I recall, the spumoni was dome shaped with four concentric layers consecutively colored brown, green, yellow, and red, with red at the center of the dome. It made a strong impression on me because I liked the flavor of the yellow part very much. Of course, I can't help but think that that was real spumoni whereas most of the ice creams sold today as "spumoni" are cheap imitations. I always wanted to know the flavoring for the yellow part. As I grew older, I began to suspect that the yellow part was flavored with Strega liqueur, see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strega_(liqueur) , but I can't prove it. Imitation Strega flavoring was commonly sold in Italian grocery stores and used to flavor cannoli filling. You can buy imitation Strega flavoring online, e.g., at
http://www.ditalia.com/The-Bakery-Il-Forno/Baking-Goods/La-Torinese-Strega , but this is a different brand than was popular many years ago. You can buy real Strega at Binnys, see
http://www.binnys.com/spirits/Liquore_Strega_115231.html . Anyway, although Strega flavored ice cream tastes good, my memory is not vivid enough to positively identify Strega as the flavor of the yellow part of the spumoni from my youth.
