In my case, I only drink diet soda, so the artificial sweetener is already there. I hate A&W diet root beer so I bought A&W diet cream soda for $1 per 2 liter plastic bottle. Then I added real sassafras oil (containing safrol), wintergreen oil, and allspice oil dissolved in propylene glycol to aid dissolution in water. The rates were respectively approximately 1/2, 1/4, and 1/4 drops. After aging in the refrigerator for several days, it was very good.

What? You never added ground beef to canned chile?

There is something special in Big K Red Creme Soda. Modifying this Creme Soda, as described above, makes the best root beer that I have ever tasted. Too bad a diet version is unavailable.

I bought it at Dr. Michael's Herb Shop about 40 years ago. See:

Lorann's Sassafras Flavor is no substitute.

I use 40 year old sassafras oil to make my own stuff. Distilled essential oils typically have a very long shelf life.

Sassafras oil is a controlled substance in the USA because it can be used to make certain drugs. I assume that you can still get it in some other countries.

I came up with a formula without sassafras oil.

2 drops wintergreen oil
1/2 drop allspice oil
1/4 drop anise oil
2 liters Big K Red Creme Soda

The Big K Red Creme Soda really is special and substitutes won't work right. Incidentally, Big K Root Beer is mediocre.
