Hello Root Beer Fans!

I'm new to this site, but not new to the beverage.

I'm seeking information about a William Donohue Root Beer from
Peekskill New York.

My grandfather was a bottle digger and the story is that he dug
the WD Root Beer Bottle along the Hudson River in the mid 1930's.

The bottle is ceramic, approx' 10 inches tall by almost four inches round.

It is Tan in color, with a blackish/greenish/blueish typography
(not a label, or applique) in the glaze. It seems to have a pontil
and uses a cork to seal it.

Any help would be appreciated in determining the history of the
this particular producer. I have an image of the bottle, but do not
know how to attach?

Please send an email with the picture attached to rootbeer at root-beer dot org (using the correct symbols and no spaces, of course). I'll do some research to see what I can find...

Here is an update of what I found out about the WD bottle I have.

The bottle, a earthenware type was produced and commonly used
in the US anywhere from the Revolutionary times up to the 1920's.
A pretty large period. I have determined that it was made in the
United States. I have come to this conclusion from the fact that the
bottle does not have a makers mark stamped onto the bottom
or the neck. If it had a stamp, it would more than likely have been
imported from England, which was common from the 1700's to the
late 1800's. The American potters rarely stamped their bottles for such a utlitarian object which was considered disposable.

It is of the "salt" fired type and it's shape falls under the pony classification
which was commonly used to bottle spring, mineral and soda waters, including flavored soda waters.

My next step is to find out when WD produced Root Beer. I'm hoping to explore the Westchester County archives (NY) which I'm hoping to do this summer on my next trip east. I'm in Illinois and it's a bit tough to just pop in and search.

However, I think I can rule out the 1830's. I have obtained a plot map of the Peekskill area and there is no listing of William Donohue?

Maps back then listed who owned (lived at) the structures depicted and business listings of the areas.

That's it for now and I will continue my research in adding this brand to the archive of Root Beer history. Even the dead ends have been very informative.
