My family are missionaries in Kenya and of all the things we miss (electricity all the time, clean water all the time, Velvetta cheese, chocloate chips, etc) by far the hardest thing we leave behind is Root Beer! They do not have it in Kenya. I am taking back with me this week as we return there from furlough two bags of Gnome extract to try and make my own. I have never done this and welcome any and all suggestions. Especially if someone has done this in a developing company. I do not believe we will be able to get carbonated water, so I will have to use yeast.

Who knows, maybe this is the start of a new adventure in Kenya!

Thanks for your help!

As you probably know, getting real beer and beer bottles in Kenya shouldn't be a problem. Tusker Beer is world famous as a decent lager. I don't drink so I can sympathize with your predicament. Non-commercial alcohol production is extremely common in Kenya. Kenyans make home brew called chang'aa and busaa beer, so I know you can get something to ferment with, though I doubt it will be as good quality as a brewery shop in the west. I suspect a lot of people brew with baker's yeast. I know the teachers at my school did (I was in the Peace Corps). People brew wine, millet beer, and mead (honey beer). Supposedly yeast made from fermenting finger millet (wimbi) works well. Try to find brewers yeast, preferably live, but dried if you can't find the live stuff.
